I figured everyone needs a good laugh about now, so I thought this old SNL clip sent to me from one of our readers Marko would do the trick. This is probably NSFW, although it was shown on TV.

The Honor is Worth More

Well, what a week.  Tom Brady has officially passed Curt Schilling for having the most famous footwear in Boston history.  Enough already, sorry Giants fans....he's playing, will play well end of story..no trophy for allstrarnfl.gifyou this year.  A question was proposed to Brady the other day that I think speaks to most professional sports.  When asked if Brady if he'd being playing in the Superbowl, Brady replied, "The Superbowl no doubt, the Pro Bowl, I'll wait and see."

How ironic, on a weekend where the NHL All-Star game was played.  Be honest, did anyone even know it was All-Star weekend in the NHL?  I admit being named to any respective All-Star team in any professional allstarnhl.gifcareer is a tremendous accolade.  But come on, the games are a joke.  The NBA over/under (not that we promote gambling at Bostonsportz........pffffttt...) is about 300, the NHL All-Star games has about 20 goals scored, the Pro-Bowl is a watered down version of an alumni game with certain rules enforced (no rushing punts etc..), they tried to make the MBL All-Star game competitive with the home field advantage going to the league winner for the World Series (Yes, I'm aware the Sox benefitted in '04').  But seriously, remember Pete Rose and Ray Fossey, Rose barrelling into Fossey and ultimately changing his career....Rose was crucified (long before the gambling).

My point is this, it's a reward for the players in the respective profession.  Let them enjoy it, better yet let them enjoy it with the fans.  I'm attracted to more of the skills competition: 3 point shooting, slam dunk contest, accuracy shooting, hardest slap shot, quarterback accuracy, home run derby.  That's what fansallstarnnba.gif want to see, premier athletes showcasing their specific talent against other premier athletes in skills competitions, not a JV version of what they're asked to do day in and day out.

So name these guys to their teams, All-Pro, Wales Conference, NBA East & West, AL & NL All-stars.  It'll mean more to the athletes and fans.  So Brady doesn't go to the Pro-Bowl, so he gets the recognition, but who'll take his place........probably the 5th or 6th quarterback in the NFL.  Folks, Jeff Garcia is in the Pro-Bowl, because of guys not accepting after enduring a laborious physical season since mid July.  Some even having surgery because their teams season ended in late December.

allstarmlb.gifThese teams are reserved for the best players in the league at their respective positions.  They're not reserved for guys who make it by default, and we won't even touch the MLB ruling that every team has to be represented.  If you're at the professional level and you can't produce one legitimate All-Star, it's time to get rid of the franchise and eliminate watered down competition.

Tsk Tsk SI

Posted on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 06:59PM by Registered CommenterMike Symes in , | Comments2 Comments | EmailEmail | PrintPrint

First of all, I'm an avid reader of Sports Illustrated.  It arrives on Thursday or Friday at my house and I'm done with the issue by the next morning.  If you're someone that loves sports, you can appreciate SI.  You might not agree with some of the writers, but it does provide a good round table when you're with your buddies.

I credit SI for being there at the moment a significant event happens or a milestone occurs.  I also give recognition to the fact that they are right on with the covers.  As we all know, even if you're a part time viewer of the guy with the bad hair weave from NY, the cover is what sells.  What a passerby sees on the cover at the newstand will prompt them to pick up this periodical to browse or to buy.  It is here that I'm at fault with SI.

As you may or may not know, history occurred not once, but twice within 3 weeks.  The hometown 11 finished the regular season at 16-0.  Ok, the publication does not print an issue that week, they haven't for sibf.jpgyears.  So the previous issue was BB dressed as Ol Saint Nick.  No problem here, they don't publish an issue.....I can live with that.  Ok, the next week AFTER the Pats went 16-0, Brett Favre in a great photo amidst a snowstorm.  The photo is great and I can appreciate that, but SI the Pats weren't even on the cover after setting an NFL regular season record.

Ok, being a good Catholic (thank you Mrs. Nisby and Mrs. Slaney), I turn the other cheek.  I appreciate Brett Favre, I wish more athletes had his passion and enthusiasm for their respective sports.  But the Pats beat the "scariest" team in the playoffs and tied the Dolphins for 17-0.  We know the old grumps for the Sunny State would still not acknowledge the record until 19 and done is accomplished.  The Pats this past Sunday beat the Chargers for the AFC Championship and a trip to Arizona.  AND!!!!! set another record, they won 18 games in a season.

So I'm winding down my day, the baby is bathed, the books are read and I sit in my easy chair.  My wife sieli.jpgyells down "Your SI is here."  Who do I see on the front cover............the Hick from Ole Miss, Eli Manning and to make it worse beneath the photo is "Why Dr. Z will pick the Giants in the Superbowl".......I'm sorry what was that again?

Hey folks, look I appreciate the competitiveness of the greatest game ever invented.  I also appreciate Tom Coughlin, I've always liked him.  A disciple of the Big Tuna and much like BB, he doesn't cater to these guys.  He wants football players, so these pampered athletes misconstrue Coughlin's discipline as a clone of Josef Stalin.  I appreciate the Giants played the Pats tough in week 16, but when the clocked ticked 0:00 the Pats were ahead.  With two weeks to prepare, you honestly think BB isn't going to have a new wrinkle for Eli.....come on.

But back to my point.  SI you printed the famous photo in 1973 with Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick beneath the goalposts (and Larry Csonka having his middle finger extended)..title was "Perfect".  No problem, I was not around in '72' or '73', but history is history.  SI you made two HUGE mistakes without a mention of the Pats record setting season.

I know the rest of the country is jealous.  I believe in the fall Boston graced the covers 5 out of 6 weeks.  Hey folks, these are the good old days right now.  No more waiting for only Larry or Bobby Orr to represent Boston.  When's the last time the Bruins made a cover?  How about the Celtics prior to Garnett, Pierce and Allen....probably the Mesosic Era.  We have maybe (and will be confirmed on the evening of February 3rd) the greatest dynasty assembled in NFL history.  They keep setting record after record, and SI.......you missed the opportunity for 2 weeks to let the rest of the country know to appreciate this team.

And for who did the Pats get dissed by.........another Manning.  To take a line from the late Red Fox (Sanford and Son)..."It's the big one Elizabeth, I'm coming."  Wow, the NFL showcasing the Manning family.  Sidenote: nice of Peyton to be there for little bro's biggest game of his career.  I remember Eli being at the RCA Dome last year.  But this family is the like the Jackson 5 as the first family of rock n roll.  The NFL wants the Mannings to be the first team of the NFL.

So SI you blew it.  I'll continue to be an avid reader, but you've left me scratching my head for almost 3 weeks now.  I think when you let Rick Reilly go, you lost some common sense as well.

What's Up With Colts Fans?

As the Colts were on their way to being upset by the Chargers On Sunday, The NFL honered it's Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick competition winners and as Anna Grant, a 15-year-old from Stratham and freshman at Exeter High School (who was wearing a New England Patriots' jersey) was introduced, she was booed by the Colts fans.

Yesterdays finish to the Walpole, MA vs.. Hamilton, Ohio Little League World Series game was just incredible! (video below)

Michael Rando's over-the-wall grab robbed Hamilton, Ohio's John Cornett of a walkoff home run in the first game of the Little League World Series yesterday, creating a highlight that led the evening "SportsCenter" and made it onto the  jumbotron at Fenway Park.

"I don't think I'll ever let go of this ball," Rando said.

Who's Now Doesn't Like Boston

ESPN'S newest thing on SportsCenter is Who's Now.

Throughout July, "SportsCenter" will air "Who's Now," a daily series in which viewers will help ESPN determine the ultimate sports star by considering both on-field success and off-field buzz. Based on fan nominations, ESPN Research selected 32 finalists to square off in a single-elimination bracket. The winner of each matchup will advance based upon fan voting (70 percent) and ESPN's three-person panel (30 percent). In the first round, the panel consists of Michael Wilbon, Kirk Herbstreit and Keyshawn Johnson.

Besides the fact it takes up most of each show and you see the same thing over and over again. There is a BIGGER PROBLEM! I'm going to list four first round match-ups, See if you can figure out the problem.

(1) Peyton Manning def. (8) Amanda Beard
(2) Alex Rodriguez def. (7) Terrell Owens
(2) Derek Jeter def. (7) Sidney Crosby
(1) Tom Brady vs (8) David Ortiz

Wow, This is ridiculous! Peyton (a #1 seed) takes on a girl who no one hardly knows, Arod (a #2 seed) takes on TO who everyone hates and Jeter (a #2 seed) takes on a freakin hockey player.

Tom Brady faces David Ortiz (a #8 seed). WHATTTT??? While those three clowns face cupcakes, somehow Boston's two biggest stars face off in round one and Ortiz is even an #8 seed! This match-up should have been way down the line in this tourney. Come on ESPN!! Feel free to comment.

Dan Patrick Leaving ESPN

Posted on Monday, July 9, 2007 at 04:42PM by Registered CommenterScott (CEO) in | CommentsPost a Comment | EmailEmail | PrintPrint

dan-patrick.jpgAfter 18 years Dan Patrick will be leaving ESPN, it was announced today by Patrick and Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, production. Patrick’s final radio broadcast will be on Friday, Aug. 17. The mutual agreement will allow Patrick to pursue new interests outside of ESPN, and will bring to an end his involvement with ESPN’s radio, television and magazine outlets.

Patrick said: “I’ve spent a third of my life at ESPN. All my children were born while I was employed here. I feel privileged to have had this opportunity and I have extremely mixed emotions about leaving. With that said, I told ESPN that I believe it’s time for me to try something different, something that will also be challenging and rewarding. While I’m not sure what that will be, I am grateful to ESPN for its willingness to allow me to pursue new endeavors.”

This is bad news for ESPN as Dan was one of the only good "old" guys left there. I'm not sure where he'll go now, although he did already turn down an interview to host The Price Is Right.

Chestnut Mania!

Posted on Friday, July 6, 2007 at 10:31AM by Registered CommenterScott (CEO) in , | Comments2 Comments | EmailEmail | PrintPrint

I watched the Nathan's hot dog eating contest from Coney Island on Wednesday and admit it was a greatchessnut.jpg show. I was rooting for Chestnut to break the record, which he did (66 hot dogs in 12 minutes), and couldn't wait to see who would take home the coveted mustard belt.

In a gutsy showdown that combined tension and indigestion, Joey Chestnut emerged as the world's champion, knocking off six-time winner Takeru Kobayashi.

Chestnut, the favorite in the annual Fourth of July competition, inhaled a staggering Hot Dog every 10.9 seconds before a screaming crowd in Coney Island.

Here's the video of the last few minutes of the contest. The announcers get carried away just a little bit.

Well, I'm back. Most of of you are probably thinking, I didn't know you were gone. I was sick in the hostpital for a few weeks. I'm very slowly getting back up to speed. Thanks to Jamie for his great quick thoughtZ posts (read them all here) and Tina for her summer TV list of guilty treasures.

Ok, Tonight is the BIG Sopranos series finale and I hope my man Tony makes it (although I doubt it) and lives like Whitey Buldger somewhere. Here's the HBO trailer (WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILER)

Father of the year

One of my favorite shows on TV right now is the very funny 30 Rock. I think the reason the show is so good is because of Alec Baldwin. I hope this story will not effect his career (although it probably should). What is it with these Baldwin brothers? Always in trouble. TMZ.com reports:

(AUDIO BELOW, CHOOSE OPEN AFTER CLICKING PHOTO)

An enraged Alec Baldwin unleashed a volcanic tirade of threats and insults on his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, calling her a "thoughtless little pig," and bashing her mother Kim Basinger -- and TMZ has obtained the whole thing unfiltered and raw. And we've learned, a family law judge was so alarmed after hearing the tape, she has temporarily barred Baldwin from having any contact with his child.

After Ireland failed to answer her father's scheduled morning phone call from New York on April 11, Alec went berserk on her voice mail, saying "Once again, I have made an ass of myself trying to get to a phone," adding, "you have insulted me for the last time."

Baldwin's lawyer, Vicki Greene, told TMZ, "Whatever happened yesterday was sealed and confidential. What you're telling me you've got you shouldn't have."

alec-baldwinx.jpg

TMZ updates:

UPDATE: Basinger's publicist, Annette Wolfe, told TMZ: "The voicemail speaks for itself."

UPDATE: A friend of Alec Baldwin's just contacted TMZ to say that the actor called Ireland last week and apologized for his outburst. The friend added that Ireland is the most important thing in the world to Alec and that he is frustrated because over the last six years, Kim has "tried everything" to alienate Ireland from him.

UPDATE: Alec Baldwin's spokesperson released the following statement to the TV show "EXTRA": "In the best interest of the child, Alec will do what the mother is pathologically incapable of doing ... keeping his mouth shut and obeying the court order. The mother and her lawyer leaked this sealed material in violation of a court order. Although Alec acknowledges that he should have used different language in parenting his child, everyone who knows him privately knows what he has been put through for the past six years."

Looks like fun

All these people running or watching the Boston Marathon are crazy! 30mph wind gusts, raw, cold, nasty rain. I guess if you've trained for a year for it, you just deal with it. I also want to say I think the Boston Police might have a law suit on their hands. As I was watching the lead woman being followed by a Police bike, The officer looked like Corey Dillon giving a straight arm to a spectator on the side of the road, He/she fell down hard and you could see everyone in the background waving for help. If I find the video, I'll link to it later.

Unnecessary?

Posted on Friday, April 13, 2007 at 06:20PM by Registered CommenterScott (CEO) in | CommentsPost a Comment | EmailEmail | PrintPrint

BSCBASEBALL.jpgThe Bridgewater State baseball team won the other day 57-1 vs. Newbury College, No, that's not a typo, 57-1. I have a lot of questions about this game. I need some answers.

-Was that really necessary?

-Is Newbury College that bad?

-Is Bridgewater State that good?

-Why wasn't there a brawl?

-Why didn't someone (either the manager's, AD's or the umps) step in? It was 31-0 after 3 INNINGS!

-Besides all of the records Bridgewater State broke, Was a game like this good for anyone involved?

Here is a link to the box score.

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - - In a record setting performance, the Bridgewater State College baseball team equaled or tied a number of NCAA and school records as the Bears defeated Newbury College, 57-1, this afternoon at Alumni Park.

In a game that lasted only 7 innings, BSC broke the single-game RBI record and tied the single-game hits record for all NCAA Divisions. The Bears registered 54 runs batted in and pounded out 44 hits. The old RBI record of 53 was set by Division II University of Saint Francis of Illinois versus Robert Morris on April 2, 1996. The NCAA hits record of 44 was accomplished by Saint Francis in the very same game.

The Bears shattered the Division III records for most runs scored in a game and greatest margin of victory which was set by Marietta College back in 1999. Marietta defeated La Roche College, 48-0, on April 7, 1999.

Bridgewater scored 13 runs in the first inning, 9 in the second, 9 in the third, 16 in the fourth, 8 in the fifth, and a pair of runs in the sixth. The 16-run fourth inning set the school mark for the most runs in an inning. The previous record was a 13-run fourth innings in a 30-0 win at Fitchburg State on April 27, 2002. Along with their 44 hits, the Bears were also issued 20 base-on-balls and were hit by pitch 4 times.

I really don't know how I feel about this from all sides.

Simmons extends

Posted on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 11:07AM by Registered CommenterScott (CEO) in | CommentsPost a Comment | EmailEmail | PrintPrint

BILLS.jpgOne of my favorite writers Bill Simmons has a new deal with ESPN.com. The network announced today that the former Boston Sports Guy signed a multi-year extension to continue his columns and features for both ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine, but to also now consult on original shows and projects for ESPN Original Entertainment.

“Simmons is a remarkable writer who has helped carve out an entirely new kind of voice in sports,” said John Skipper, ESPN executive vice president, content. “His columns are social currency in offices, ball fields and sports bars around the country, he is a must read for millions of sports fans, and his contributions to content at ESPN through the years are both prolific and extremely valuable."

John Walsh, executive vice president and executive editor of ESPN Inc. said, “Simmons unique observations about the intersecting worlds of sports and pop culture make him a consistent favorite. His inventive style weaves humor and observations with truly insightful sports writing. He was the first to truly capture a view of the sports world from a fan’s perspective."
