Well folks, it's that time of year again. The new season of Rescue Me has started (Wednesday Nights on FX 10pm Eastern) and it sure has started out with a bang. This season picks up roughly nine months from where season three ended. For those of you who may be fuzzy, let me provide a refresher course. Franco is really into this girl but she has a brother who is a little slow and has tourettes. Garrety and Maggie get married and are one screwed up couple. Probie is bi, then he's not...I guess the writers just can't decide what they want to do with him. Lou gets with a sort of nun who has a couple weeks left of being a nun. The chief has a heart attack. Johnny is shot and killed on a stake out, after he gets Janet pregnant. Tommy is about to move in with Shiela and leave the FDNY. But instead he decides to stay with the NYFD. Shiela gets pissed then learyRescue-Me-1.jpgslips Tommy her roofie colada from earlier in the season and throws a hissy fit while he is knocked out. While she's flipping out she throws a lantern and starts a fire in the house. We were left hanging there. Did they get out? Did they die? We don't know.

Whew...Ok, now that you guys are caught up. On to the review. Season four picks up about nine months after the fire incident. We open with Tommy being grilled by investigators about the fire. He is spitting this story about mirecats or something that no on on this earth could even begin to believe. So they call bullshit on his story, tell him it doesn't add up and basically accuse him of starting the fire. Of course we all know he didn't start the fire from season 3's finale, but according to the police Tommy co-signed a fire insurance policy on the house and took a life insurance policy out on Shiela two weeks before the fire. They grill him for the next couple minutes, suddenly he wakes up, and it was a dream. There's a scene of him calming the new baby down in the living room when his oldest daughter, Colleen, comes home at 3am slamming the door and waking the baby up. He bitches at her for being out late, blah blah blah, apparently she's dating some 26 year old lead singer, smoking pot, banging her boyfriend and drinking. That's right the daughter is no longer a lesbian as that was "So six months ago!" Janet also knows all about her escapade. Tommy wakes up Janet and bitches at her about it. This argument wakes up the little sister while they're talking about the "Sex bomb." She asks if Tommy is going to jail and names off about 8 people who say he's going to jail including all the kids at her school. This is by far one of the funniest opening scenes I've seen on TV in a long time. I laughed hysterically through the whole opening credits.

Anyways, so after the credits roll we catch up with the gang. Franco's girl's brother wants him to marry her so he can get screw his down syndrome, partially deaf, paralyzed girlfriend. Lou is having sex in a church with his not a nun anymore girlfriend. Garrety is trying to throw out Maggie's big box of porn, he gets caught and Maggie lays down the law. The chief is trying to get back into shape to pass a stress test and get back on the job; his gay son asks him to be the best man at his gay marriage, he agrees but is uncomfortable. The new baby doesn't like Janet they argue some more about Colleen. Commercial break. My thoughts? Is this not the funniest shit you've ever seen? The dynamic between all of the actors on this show is as outstanding as it's ever been and the writing is as good this season as in previous seasons.

We come back from the break with Tommy finding out from his cousin lawyer that his case is not so good. At the fire house, we find out that the new chief knows some interesting facts about propane. We also find out how Tommy got out of the fire, a volunteer firefighter carried him out of the house...a girl no less...and he has to take her out to dinner. Tommy is again reminded that everyone thinks he's going to jail. Garrety thinks probie is dead because he can't wake him up. Come to find out he was knocked out on drugs......from a colon exam.....because his family has a history of colon cancer........yeeeeaaaah, he's still gay as ever.

Now we get to what we've all been waiting for, the first fire scene of the year folks. So there are some cats that are trapped in a burning building. As you can all expect, the guys go into the building and hilarity ensues. Talk about throwing in one of the worst firemen clichés ever, but they somehow managed to make it good. The group bullshits on the way up. Suddenly the building explodes, and the floor collapses. And a montage starts as the group struggles to stay alive through the collapse. Stop right there. A montage you say? That's right, a montage. Now, there have been many a complaints about the montage. I personally liked it. Sure the music was odd, and it was oddly placed... but it was still good. At least better than anything else on TV this summer like *cough* The Closer (in which there are guns that can load bullets after being shot ... without the slide moving.) and *cough* Traveler ( A rip-off on the fugitive with some whiney college kids that piss me off.) and *cough* ... Well, you get the point. Further more, what is with all these floors collapsing on the show? Are the buildings in NYC that structurally compromised that they fall apart immediately during a fire? Just a thought.

Anyways, the gang survives by sliding right out the side of the building. Talk about being lucky huh? We come back from another break to another interview dream sequence. He's woken up by the new meat this season. Jennifer Esposito. Hot, Hot, Hot. And DAMN! The woman has some junk in her trunk that's for sure. Anyways, she's the volunteer firefighter who saved him from the beach house fire. After that we see Garrety and Maggie bonding....through Maggie's porn. We cut to Franco, who uses almost dying that day, in the collapse, to get some sympathy sex from his girl; and back to Maggie and Sean who are watching porn together. This is absolutely hilarious. I cried during these scenes, that's how funny they were. It's good to know the comedy aspect of the show is still there as that's what most of this episode has consisted of so far.

Tommy gets a visit from his dead cousin in an elevator. Some people see him cowering in the corner as his ghost cousin beats on him as the doors open. "There was a bee in there..." he says, "I think I got him." Now on to the shocker ending. Are you ready for this? ... Are you sure? Ok. Shiela is alive! The whole episode we're being led to believe she died in the fire and WHAM! There she is, as self centered as ever too. And that was it. The end of the first episode of Rescue Me this summer. Now... on to my opinions.

On first viewing, I thought the episode moved almost too fast. I also thought that they were trying to throw too many plot points into an hour long show. But after I watched it a couple of times. I realized the flow of it was actually pretty good. I think it was just Rescue Me withdrawal, I had to get back into my Rescue Me mode. Make no mistake about it, this show is back with a vengeance, and i hope on par to get an emmy this season. God knows they deserved it when they were up against 24 last year. While I'm infinitely more of a 24 fan than a Rescue Me fan, it really could have gone either way. Anyways, overall I was beyond satisfied. RESCUE ME IS BACK PEOPLE!! So here's to the new season that continues with its typical style and flair; and has started off with a bang!

Season 4 of the critically acclaimed dramady series Rescue Me, starring Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominee Denis Leary, premiers tonight at 10PM ET. FX will run the 13 episodes over 14 weeks (no new episode on the night of July 4th). All series regulars return this season and guest stars include Larenz Tate (at least 4 episodes), Jerry Adler (at least 3 episodes), Jennifer Esposito (4 episodes), and Susan Sarandon (2 episodes).

This is by far one of the best shows on TV. Here is the end of season 3 review set to music.

Here is one of my favorite scenes from season 2 where the crew is forced to take "sensitivity training"
